A NEW ITV drama based on the events partly surrounding the murder of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox will be screened from next week.
The Walk-In, starring Stephen Graham, sees him play activist Matthew Collins, a reformed Neo-Nazi, now working as a journalist for the anti-racist organisation, Hope not Hate.
In the five-part drama’s opening episode, screened on Monday, October 3, shows the far right in Britain seizing on political unrest caused by the Brexit referendum and Islamist terrorist attacks, culminating in the murder of Ms Cox.
The 41-year-old Labour MP was shot and stabbed in her constituency by far-right supporter, Thomas Mair, on June 16, 2016. Mair was found guilty of her murder and sentenced to life imprisonment following a trial held in November 2016. Ms Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater, was elected as the MP for Batley and Spen following a by-election last year.
Collins pinpoints a Far Right Neo-Nazi group who want to create a race war. He wants to infiltrate such organisations by running moles, or walk-ins, and aims to publish information online about their activities to expose them.
But he was unable to break into this particular group. They grow in strength relatively unchecked until Ms Cox’s murder brought their potential into focus and they became the first Far Right organisation to be banned by the government since the Second World War.
The drama series, filmed in and around London, will begin on Monday, October 3, at 9pm on ITV.
It is the latest forthcoming ITV drama to be either filmed in the Bradford district or have links to the district.
A drama based on the case of a killer who shot and blinded a police officer and went on the run was filmed in the district.
A green adjacent to Rayner Mount in Allerton was used for a three-part factual drama called The Hunt for Raoul Moat.
Newcastle bouncer Moat, 37, killed his love rival Chris Brown, 29, in Birtley, Gateshead, in July 2010, then blasted his former lover Samantha Stobbart, leaving her in a critical condition. No date has been announced for its broadcast.
Meanwhile, the former Shipley tax office and Shipley town hall were used for filming for the forthcoming ITV medical thriller, Malpractice. No dates have been announced for the two shows to be broadcast.
Graham is also starring in an upcoming Netflix drama, Bodies, which has been filmed in Little Germany and at Salts Mill in Saltaire this month.
