A NEW pub will be open in Brighouse by December after plans to convert the former Post Office building were passed.

Amber Taverns made a bid earlier this year to take on the site of Park Street, which at the time was being run as a restaurant known as The Office.

The development plans have now been approved by Calderdale Council, with a couple of alterations, including removing a karaoke room from the plans and agreeing to not play music in the courtyard.

A spokesman for the firm said that Brighouse had been on its target list for a number of years, and once refurbished they propose to call it The Old Post Office.

They added that now planning permission had been granted, they will be formally completing on the business later this week.

“We will undertake a refurbishment of the business to transform it into a modern community pub – the proposal is to call it The Old Post Office.

“The development will take around eight weeks so we are planning to open towards the end of November, early December.

“The pub will have a full sports package including SkySports, BT, Amazon, Prime and Racing UK – with multiple screens so we can offer a broad church of televised sport.

“With the recent success of the Ladies Euro tournament we are looking forward to catching the final stages of the Men’s World Cup 2022 and the Women’s World Cup in 2023.”

“Amber is really excited to be in Brighouse, it has been on our target town list for 15 years – a great town to invest in,” he added.

In a design and access statement accompanying the plans it states that if successful the prominent building would become a drinking establishment, using the ground and first floors as well as the courtyard area.

The plans themselves show a lounge and bar area on the ground floor, alongside a garden area with seating.

The first floor would also have a bar and seating area, and an office. The second floor would be two-bedroom accommodation for the manager of the new pub.

A report from planners states: “The proposed use will add to the nighttime economy, promote Brighouse as a place for leisure and will assist in ensuring the vitality and viability of the town centre. The proposal as such is considered to be acceptable in principle.”

Amber Taverns operates The Drum Winder, Ivegate, Bradford; Library Tap, Main Street, Bingley; and Bow Legged With Brass in Halifax.
