Bradford’s Jewish community is celebrating one of the most important religious events on its calendar right now.

Sunday evening marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah – bringing members together for synagogue services and family gatherings.

The major occasion marks the birth of the world and humanity, Laurence Saffer, president of the Leeds Jewish Representative Council and member of Bradford Synagogue, said.

Mr Saffer said: “It also marks the beginning of the period of judgment where we reflect on our sins, deeds, and conduct and how we may repent and improve ourselves.

Jews traditionally dip apple in honey to symbolise a wish for a sweet year.

“The shofar, rams horn, is blown to awake us from our spiritual slumber and is reminiscent of the Kings’ trumpeters sounding on his coronation.”
