An offer to commemorate the Queen's funeral at a Bradford pub has been scuppered after police intervened.

Q Gardens had invited customers to celebrate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by enjoying a pint for 6p - the price it would have been at the time of her coronation in 1953.

Bosses felt it was only right that the bar did "something special" to commemorate the Queen's extraordinary reign and planned to hold a two minutes' silence and offer the cut price beer between 2.22 and 2.44pm.

But after a visit from police officers, warning him about alcohol minimum pricing law, Q Gardens co-manager and long-time royalist Sean Lowe decided to give the beer away for free instead.

Officers called into the pub to inform Sean about the legal reasons he wasn't allowed to run the offer.

"Rather than doing it for 6p a pint to honour her memory, we are doing it for free," said Sean.

"People are still looking forward to it. Ultimately it is about everyone coming together and paying their respects to the Queen."

A minimum unit price of 50p per unit was introduced in 2018, and a ban on selling alcohol below the level of alcohol duty plus VAT has been in place since 2014.

Dean Young, who visited the pub with his daughter and granddaughter, said: "This deal is fantastic. I am not a big royalist, so I didn't think I'd be this emotional.

"It has just brought everyone together. I got here at 12 so I would be ready for the deal."

Customer Dave Lang said: "I live locally anyway, so I would have been in. But you can't complain about free beer. It is busier than I thought it would be. It was really good on them to put it on. It has really brought people together."

Manager Sean said: "My family have always been massive supporters of the royals, particularly my grandma.

"It has just been passed down the generations. I really loved the Queen and what she did for this country.

"It was like let's stay open and pay our respects in a way where everyone can get together for this historic moment.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

"A lot of the customers who don't really talk have been in conversation with others about it in recent days. It has really brought a community feel."

"Although it is going to cost the business money, it is our way of honouring her memory and all the work she did for the country."
