Bradford supermarket supremo Sir Ken Morrison is the richest individual in Yorkshire.

In the latest Rich List of the country's well-heeled, Sir Ken, who retired as chairman of Morrison's supermarket chain last month after 56 years in charge, is said to be worth £1.45 billion.

Ranked as the 52nd richest person in Britain, Sir Ken, 67, might have slipped 17 places compared to last year but can still boast a personal fortune far higher than anyone else in the county. And, as he departed, the firm reported a 66 per cent increase in profits to £612m for the last financial year.

Yorkshire's richest family is the Healeys - brothers Eddie and Malcolm - who made their fortune from shopping centres and kitchens and have a combined wealth of £1.9 billion.

The wealth of the Bradford district's second richest man is hardly something to be sniffed at either.

David Hood, 60, is ranked 325th and is believed to be worth £250 million. As the biggest individual shareholder in Pace Micro Technology he saw profits treble to £15.4 million last year. His personal wealth has risen by £10 million over the last 12 months.

Motor trader Jack Tordoff, 72, is worth £210 million thanks to the continued growth of his JCT 600 firm and is ranked 380th in the list.

The firm moved into new £3 million headquarters in Apperley Bridge last year and has 33 dealerships. The owner's personal wealth swelled by £40 million in the last year. Barry Rubery, 60, who started Pace in a bedroom of his home in Lidget Green, Bradford, in 1982, is worth £122 million. Now chief executive of interactive technology provider Electra Entertainment, he made £168m from selling his stake in Pace in the 1990s.

Safestyle UK chairman John Ross is said to be worth £79 million. His Bradford-based windows and doors specialists scooped the Health and Safety and the Installer of the Year awards at the prestigious G07 Awards in October.

Hair products have netted Martin Penny a personal fortune of £80 million. The multi-millionaire, 55, made £21 million from selling his stake in Good Hair Day (GHD). He does still account for a £64 million holding in the Silsden-based business.

Others who made the 1,000-strong list include James Barrett, 53, director of Barrett Steel, based in Cutler Heights Lane, Bradford, worth £70 million.

Bradford-based academic publisher Emerald has seen Dr Keith Howard, 67, net £55 million. Barry Burns has made £53 million as chairman and founder of Spectrum Computer Services, based in East Parade, Bradford.

Former Bradford City FC chairman Gordon Gibb, 32, and his family are worth £45 million. Retail entrepreneur Brett Palos made handsome gains when his ISA group was sold to Electra Private Equity, of Bradford last June. He is said to be worth £43 million.

At 37-years-old Afzal Kahn is valued at an estimated £40 million and owns luxury vehicle company Kahn Design in Canal Road, Bradford. He gave a glimpse of his financial muscle when he paid a record £440,000 for the sought-after F1 registration plate recently which is due to adorn a high-speed Range Rover he is developing with motorsport engineering company Cosworth.

Topping the Sunday Times list is steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and his family with an estimated wealth of £27,700 million - which also puts Chelsea football club owner and oligarch Roman Abramovich in the shade despite his £11.7 billion fortune which lands him in second spot.
