Blind youngsters in India are the latest to benefit from the generosity of a Bradford family.

Members of the Mistry family have just got back from a trip to Gujarat to visit the school for themselves where they handed over £3,250.

The money came from The Govindbhai Foundation, which they set up in honour of their late father and grandfather giving thanks for their life in the UK.

Last year the family, there are 34 of them in total and most live in Lidget Green, gave a £5,000 bladder scanner to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Before that in July they gave £4,000 to buy three babywarmer mattresses for the maternity unit there.

The money so far for the blind school will go towards building dormitories for the children to sleep in.

The Mistrys raised the funds by hosting a party at Bradford's Valley Parade and now they are planning their next with a star-appearance from entertainer Shayan Italia - billed by David Frost as the next Elton John.

The dress code will be black tie and traditional Indian wear at the champagne dinner dance and casino charity night on Saturday, May 31, again at City's Valley Parade ground.

Money will go once more to the blind school supported by the Mamta Welfare Trust UK and to buy a Sunshine Coach for The UK's Variety Club Children's Charity.

"Last year we made £12,000, this year we want to double it. With people's support we can make a real difference," said Jessica Mistry.

She added: "When we went to the school in India we saw the children just slept in shelters on the floor, it was very basic. We're hoping the money we add from this year's event will help build three dormitories in all."

The Mistry family left Kenya during the turbulent rule of Jomo Kenyatta in 1971.
