NINE out of the 15 attacks on West Yorkshire’s firefighters since April have happened in Bradford.

These attacks saw fire crews physically assaulted, stoned and threatened with weapons.

A new report by West Yorkshire Fire Authority details attacks on firefighters since the start of the financial year (April).

It reveals that crews based at Bradford Station on Leeds Road were subject to more attacks (7) than all crews in Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield combined.

Attacks on the Bradford crews involved three physical attacks, three incidents where stones or missiles were thrown and one where a weapon was brandished.

A Shipley firefighter was subject to a physical assault and a crew from Fairweather Green were pelted with stones in the same period.

The report says: “Three of attacks have resulted in minor damage to our fire appliances.

“The Chief Fire Officer re-emphasises that even one attack is one too many and that every assistance and encouragement will be given to the police to bring offenders to court.

“Work is continuing with a variety of agencies from the police and district councils to community groups and youth leaders to address these issues.”

The report will be discussed at a meeting next week.
