THE demolition of Bradford’s Kirkgate Shopping Centre will end an era of retail in the city.

The centre was built in 1976 where the old Kirkgate Market had traded for a century - but Bradford’s retail heritage on that site dates back even further.

In 1705 it was occupied by Manor Hall and was later a market place. It was the retail hub of Bradford from when the city first began to develop. Kirkgate Market was built in 1872, designed by Lockwood and Mawson. There were protests when the much-loved market was knocked down.
