STUDENTS from a Bradford school mixed with stars including an Oscar-winning actor at an awards ceremony.

A group of students and staff at Carlton Bolling College met stars including Olivia Colman at Tender’s National Awards Ceremony held at the BAFTA’s building in London.

The event recognised the work of young people, teachers, and members of the community in preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence through speaking out, working collaboratively, and creating spaces in which young people feel safe and confident to have healthy relationships based on equality and respect.

Tender uses drama-based workshops with young people to promote healthy relationships and prevent violence and abuse.

Carlton Bolling received the Tender award for the ‘Most Supportive School’. Jess Phillips MP Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding, praised the Bradford school’s work.

She said: “Sarah Carpenter, the school’s head of PSHE) and Mohammed Azum, headteacher, have created a space where students can feel confident to speak out and discuss these issues without fear: the most vital step on the road to ending abuse.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for BBC One shows Fleabag and Killing Eve, also attended the event and said that she ‘particularly enjoyed hearing from the Healthy Relationship Ambassadors from Carlton Bolling’.

More than women a week are killed by a partner or ex-partner in England and Wales. Tender’s projects enable young people to spot and understand the early warning signs that that a relationship could become abusive empowering young people to spot unhealthy behavior early and prevent abuse from escalating. They also learn how to signpost their friends and family to suitable professional support.

Angharad Turner-Fielder, Tender’s West Yorkshire regional lead, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that the fantastic work taking place in West Yorkshire was recognised at the Tender National Awards.

“The students from Carlton Bolling arrived at the event asking if they could do a speech. They were the best speakers of the evening.

“I loved seeing Jess Phillips MP present them with the award and then nod ferociously in agreement with their superb speeches.”

The ‘Special Thank You Award’ went to PC Sally Baines, Safer Schools Officer Kirklees.

Angharad Turner-Fielder added: “Sally went out of her way to support students and even joined in with the workshop games: making herself not only visible, but also approachable.

“She then went on to ardently promote Tender’s work to more Kirklees Schools.

“Thanks to Sally’s persistence and enthusiasm Tender are now working in Kirklees with more young people than ever before.”
