BRADFORD residents in Centenary Square today paid tribute to the life of HM Queen Elizabeth as news of her sad passing at the age of 96 was announced.

Flags on top of City Hall were lowered after news of Queen's death was announced this evening.

"I'm very sorry to hear about the news today," said Surinder Singh Bhambra, 71, of Wibsey. "I have a lot of respect for her.

"God bless her. May she rest in peace. I will miss her. My condolences to her family.

"She had some up and down times with her family throughout her life, but even they are human beings too.

"She might have been missing her husband Prince Philip. They were a lovely pair."

Balmant Singh, 68, of Wrose, said: "It's very, very sad.

"She's had a good life. She did a lot, especially for the Commonwealth.

"I was pleased to see her live at the palace seven years ago."

Tara Ali, of Heaton, said: "It's going to be devastating to her family and everyone.

"She was probably so heartbroken at the death of Prince Philip.

"It's going to be hard to get used to saying God Save the King."

Gail Blues, of Greengates, said: "Everybody's going to be in shock but she's been poorly for so long.

"She's had a good life and a good run."

"You don't expect this," said Chris Beaumont, 57, of Cottingley. "She's been here that long.

"It's a shock when you hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

"She's a figure we've all looked up to and everyone had street parties for Jubilees to celebrate her life."
