Moments after the Queen's death was announced, officials at Bradford City Hall lowered the Union flag on top of the listed building.
The announcement was broadcast live on City Park's big screen.
The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II was also announced shortly into a meeting of Bradford Council's Bradford South Area Committee this evening.
The meeting, which began at 6pm, had been arranged to discuss the Area Plan for the constituency - including proposals to tackle issues like anti-social behaviour and fly tipping.
In a scene likely to have been replicated in workplaces across the country, the meeting stopped as soon as members found out the sad news.
Chair of the committee, former Council Leader Councillor David Green (Lab, Wibsey) said: " I don't think it is appropriate that this meeting continues."
He adjourned the meeting to a future date.
Shortly after the meeting was adjourned City Hall staff lowered the Union Jack flags that fly above the civic hall to half mast.
