An attempted robbery in Holme Wood and chaos at a nearby bingo hall on Sunday night were connected, police have officially confirmed.

West Yorkshire Police has arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with an attempted robbery on Eggleston Drive.

The incident took place around 7pm on Sunday evening, reportedly followed by the victims running towards safety at Buzz Bingo in Weaverthorpe Retail Park.

It comes after initial police enquiries suggested three men ran into the venue around 7.35pm and claimed they were being chased by men armed with a gun.

Bingo players who watched the scene unfold mid-game have shared eye witness accounts of people screaming and getting under the tables to seek shelter.

As the scenes unfolded, one dabber reportedly began hitting the bingo buzzer to alert the caller in the main bingo hall.

Meanwhile a smashed up car was dumped outside the entrance – damage caused by a brick, initial police enquiries suggested.

The force deployed armed police to the scene but no one was found with a weapon as well as any evidence of a firearms discharge.

The force cordoned off a large section of the Holme Wood estate on Monday, restricting access to residents only.

The huge cordons blocked most of Landscove Avenue and nearby Argent Way with several police officers guarding the scenes.
