THERE has been a “phenomenal” response to a fundraising campaign following an arson attack at a children’s play area.

There was devastation earlier this week when a double-decker bus donated to The Valley Project in Holme Wood was destroyed in an early-hours fire.

The bus had been donated by First and there were plans for it to be used as an indoor space over the winter months.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the fire was being treated as arson and today confirmed a teenager had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Valley Project aims to tackle inequalities and social isolation faced by children and young people growing up on the Holme Wood estate and the community quickly rallied around to help in its time of need.

A fundraiser was held on Thursday night, where many people turned out in a show of support.

Project co-ordinator Laura Bowen said: “We are overwhelmed by the positive community response we have had over the last couple of days.

“The community have come together to support their project. The fundraiser was a testament to this, with a huge amount of money raised and lots of fun had by all.”

She added: “We are looking to the future and are already planning bigger and better structures to replace the bus.”

Many messages of support were left on JustGiving page set up in the aftermath of the fire, which can be accessed at: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/valleyprojectbus

One message said: “Keep up the good work, without you guys the kids wouldn't have somewhere safe to play and enjoy school holidays. You always go above and beyond.”

Another said: “This is sickening after all the amazing work out in by staff and volunteers to give so many children a fantastic summer.”

Councillor Matt Edwards (Greens, Tong) said: “At a time when many people in Holmewood are struggling with rising bills, it was absolutely amazing to see so many people out last night to support Laura, Steve and the team at the Valley Project.

“They have worked tirelessly over the last few years turning a small area of wasteland into an adventure playground that the Holmewood community really value so much.

“The response from the JustGiving page has been phenomenal – we raised £1,000 in nearly three hours and £2,000 in just over 24 hours. I’m sure they will be able to put this towards the next project they do.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said a 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of arson on Thursday and bailed pending further enquiries.
