AN advertising sign for a new Costa Coffee has been refused.

An application was made for a sign to advertise a new Costa drive-thru near Leeds Bradford Airport.

The proposal was for a 10m totem sign, which one councillor said would be “too bright and obstructive”.

“The height at 10m is considered to be very excessive, which would appear unduly dominant, incongruous and is not keeping with the scale and mass of the surrounding street furniture and road,” a decision report said.

In refusing the application, planning chiefs said: “The Local Planning Authority considers that the proposed totem sign by reason of its height, design and siting in relation to the wider street scene would appear incongruous and overly-dominant.

“For these reasons, the proposal is an insensitively located addition to the street scene, to the detriment of the appearance and amenity of the surrounding area.”

They added: “For this particular application, no advice was sought before the application was submitted. As the proposal was clearly contrary to the provisions of the Development Plan, it was considered that further discussions would be unproductive for all parties.”

The coffee shop and five business units will be built on land off Lancaster Way in Yeadon.
