An inquest into the death of murdered toddler Star Hobson has been further adjourned.

At a brief hearing this morning at Bradford Coroners’ Court in Little Germany, Senior Coroner Martin Fleming was told a report from the Independent Office for Police Conduct would hopefully be finalised by the end of September and he would receive it by the end of October.

Star was 16 months old when she was murdered on September 22, 2020, at the flat in Wesley Place, Keighley, where she lived with her mother Frankie Smith.

Smith’s girlfriend Savannah Brockhill, 28, was jailed for life for murdering Star on December 15 following a lengthy trial at Bradford Crown Court, while Smith, 20, was found guilty of allowing her daughter’s death and jailed for eight years – a sentence which was extended to 12 years at the Court of Appeal.

Mr Fleming set the next hearing date for November 23 to allow him to consider the report.

Star's family will also be written to, and their views invited.

The IOPC resumed its investigation on December 16 - the day after Brockhill and Smith were jailed for murdering and allowing the death of 16-month-old Star, respectively.

West Yorkshire Police referred itself to the regulatory body due to the fact its officers had contact with Star and her family before her death.

The IOPC is looking at the police's response to three reports of injuries Star suffered in the months before her death.

In a previous statement, an IOPC spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with Star Hobson’s family, loved ones and all those affected by her tragic death.

“We began an independent investigation in October 2020 following a referral from West Yorkshire Police, due to the fact officers had contact with Star’s family prior to her death.

“Our investigation, which will look at the police response to three reports Star suffered injuries in the months before her death in September 2020, was suspended while criminal proceedings took place.

“Our investigation resumed once the trial concluded. We are currently in the process of obtaining evidence, including statements from police officers, all of whom are being treated as witnesses.”
