FOLLOWING the UK's pledge of £1.5 million of support for the victims of flood devastation in Pakistan, a Bradford MP has slammed the government claiming it's 'falling far too short'.

Imran Hussain, MP for Bradford East, called out Liz Truss's lack of support in the face of such tragedy as the support pledged equates to just 5p per person affected.

The United Nations (UN) announced yesterday that £135 million was needed to help people in Pakistan and respond to the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

Speaking on the recent devastating floods in Pakistan, Mr Hussain said: “The devastation that we have witnessed in Pakistan over recent days following near unprecedented flooding is deeply saddening, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all those caught up in this disaster, as well as to those in my constituency who are now desperately fearful for their family and friends in Pakistan.

“Given the sheer scale of the devastation caused, we need nothing less than a full response from the UK Government and the international community. Yet whilst local charities, community groups and other nations step up, the UK has pledged just £1.5 million of support – which equates to just 5p per person affected – falling far short of the £135 million that the UN says is needed just to respond to the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

“With up to a third of Pakistan estimated to be underwater, such a meagre response in the face of such tragedy should shame the Foreign Secretary and frontrunner to be the next Prime Minister. Instead of showboating ahead of entering Downing Street next week, she should be doing the job she has now by working to increase the support provided by the UK, and she can start with a reversal of the decision to ditch the 0.7% aid target which I called on her to do this week.”
