HORRIFYING police footage shows a drink driver swerving across the motorway while four times over the limit.

The video has been released as part of West Yorkshire Police's support for the national coordinated drink and drug enforcement campaign, which began on Monday and runs until Sunday.

The dashcam footage shows the driver dangerously swerving across all three lanes of the motorway, before ramping up the speed.

The vehicle is then seen moving to the hard shoulder, nearly hitting another car.

The driver was disqualified for three years and ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service, which included abstinence and rehabilitation activity.

He was fitted with an electronic tag and had to pay £180 in court costs.

As part of the campaign, a total of 91 drivers in West Yorkshire have been arrested so far.

While the national campaign is running this week, West Yorkshire Police has warned motorists that road policing officers take action all year round.

Chief Inspector Claire Patterson, said: “It is easy to go over the limit having drinks at a friend’s BBQ or soaking up the sun in a beer garden.

"Our advice is to plan ahead and think about how you are going to get home. There is always an alternative to driving whilst under the influence.

“At the very least you face losing your licence and potentially your livelihood if you are caught drink or drug driving, but the cold, hard reality is that drink and drug driving does kill.

"Our officers see the catastrophic aftermath of the mentality of ‘I’ll be ok to drive.’ Please don’t let us be knocking on the door of your loved one, all for the sake of taking drugs or having a few drinks.”
