A WOMAN who met her husband at a historic Bradford pub 30 years ago says she is looking forward to returning there when it re-opens.

Sue Pollard, now 60, of Wyke, was on a night out with a friend in 1992 when they decided to go into the Boy & Barrel in Westgate for a drink.

During her visit Sue met the man who she would marry four years later, David, now 66. They have one daughter, Maisie, who is 24.

Sue says she and David have not returned to the pub since the night they met. But she added they plan to put this right when the pub re-opens after it was bought earlier this month.

Sue said: “My friend and I had gone out to Bradford.

“We were walking past the Boy & Barrel and we said, ‘shall you go in for one?’

“We went in and everyone was really friendly in there. The people at the bar were really friendly. I got chatting to David in there.

“It was right at the very end of the evening. The place was absolutely rammed.

“Every time I drive past it (Boy & Barrel) I say to my daughter ‘that’s where me and your dad met’.

“We’ve not been back to the Boy & Barrel since that night. But when it does re-open I’m going to take my daughter there."

The Boy & Barrel can be traced back to the 17th century and has been snapped up after being on the market this summer.

No details have been revealed about the new owners, but the pub is set to be refurbished and will reopen at an unconfirmed date.

The pub has been sold for £160,000 after being on the market for an initial £175,000 asking price.

It ceased trading after it was refurbished by a previous owner in 2020.

Audrey Coyne, a previous landlady of the pub, said in 2011 that she had traced the pub back to the 1800s and had seen evidence to suggest it had been in existence as early as 1640.

The Boy & Barrel has appeared in TV shows and films. In 2012 the pub also featured in the controversial Channel 4 documentary Make Bradford British.

It featured in the iconic film Room at the Top in 1959, which was nominated for six Oscar awards and picked up two honours for Best Actress and Best Screenplay.
