Frightened residents shocked as car crashes into Bradford home

Emergency services were dispatched to Rhylstone Gardens in Undercliffe at 6.35pm on Thursday after a car crashed through a garden wall and into the side of a home, breaking a window and smashing through an inner garden wall separating a neighbouring house.

"We were shocked," said a man living in the home, who did not want to be named. "We heard a big bang and glass was blasted inside from the window.

"We had a little girl laying in front of the telly in the room when it happened.

"Fortunately no-one was hurt but it was a very frightening and traumatic experience. My partner was very scared.

She said: "I'm all right now but it was a bit of a shock to be fair.

"I was frightened for my niece. She was in the room when the window was broken and she came running into the kitchen.

"The glass went flying into the house. It happened so fast."

A neighbour said: "It was quite bad. A car has driven into the house next door.

"I was upstairs and the whole house shook. Two or three houses in this row shook together."

When the T&A arrived at the scene at about 7.30 pm, rubble from an outer wall was strewn across the driveway and the vehicle had crashed into the home, breaking a window and smashing into a garden wall separating the neighbouring home.

Two police officers were at the scene, along with ambulance service personnel and a structural engineer who was assessing the property.

One person at the scene said: "I think there's been movement of the property because the front door doesn't shut properly."

A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 6.35pm Thursday to Rhylstone Gardens.

"We sent one ambulance, treated two people at the scene but no-one was taken to the hospital." 

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "This was a damage only collision."

The man living in the house praised the emergency services for the quick response.

He said: "We'd like to thank the West Yorkshire Police for their great response to come and sort it out."

Cllr Si Cunningham (Lab, Bolton and Undercliffe) said: "This is a quiet area so I can see why people may be somewhat shocked to see something like this, however we would like to assure local residents that this was an unfortunate one-off accident and thankfully nobody has been injured.

"Our emergency services have been brilliant at supporting the families affected, and our thanks go out to them."
