POLICE have warned people to think before they call the 999 emergency line after queries whether the bizarre calls they receive were real or not.

West Yorkshire Police's Contact Management Centre shared details of the call to highlight the importance of using 999 for emergency calls only.

The team often tweets some of the more unusual calls they receive from the general public.

The force receives 120 inappropriate calls each day, and posts them on social media as part of its #Not999 campaign.

Previous calls to the contact centre have included someone called 999 to ask them to book some driving lessons for them.

Another call came from someone who had a broken oven and wanted police to fix it.

The centre also received a not 999 last week from someone who had lost their passport. The police’s tweet added this is not an emergency and needs to be reported as lost to the government’s website.

In its latest example, the team said: "And once again some of our #Not999's have gone 'viral'.

“People have asked if these are real and we wish we made these up.

“We have been averaging 1,600 emergency calls daily over the last week and not even half of these are emergencies. Please do think before you dial.”
