A HOUSING project completed by a Bradford building firm and filmed by a Farsley-based production company is set for a national TV showcase.

BBC One’s documentary series Our Lives will showcase the work of 33 families in Leeds as they build their own innovative ‘cohousing’ neighbourhood.

The project has taken 12 years to build and has been driven through by residents who wanted to find a solution to ever-rising house prices. Together they are building a whole street where they will live together, sharing common areas and making the rules as a community.

The site features 29 homes with one-bedroom flats available for £90,000 and four-bedroom homes available for £230,000. It has a communal area where residents on the site will meet up at least once a week to eat together. Shared ownership schemes for the properties are also available. Building work will be completed by October.

John Rider, site manager from Torpoint, based at Hope Park Business Centre in Bradford, says the building project has proved challenging after the Bradford building firm took on the project from a company that went into administration during the pandemic.

He said: “It’s been enjoyable but difficult. It has not been a straightforward build.

“It is nice for Torpoint to be associated with this project.

“The people have done really well on this project and that they had an idea all those years ago. They have been really tenacious to bring it to the fore.”

It is the latest documentary from Farsley-based production company Candour Productions which has appeared on national TV. Past programmes have included a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary on St Luke’s Hospital’s work with people who have long Covid in 2021.

Candour also followed the work of midwives in the Bradford district for Yorkshire Midwives On Call, which was broadcast on BBC Two earlier this year.

Bradford-based Sally Ogden, who worked as producer and director on the 33 Families documentary, says filmed took place at the Chapeltown development for six months from January this year.

She said: “It’s lovely and it’s never been done in the inner city like this before. One of the main values of the project is diversity and making it really inclusive.

“The company that built the street, Torpoint, also feature in the film.

“I live in the city. It shows that you can be a Bradford filmmaker and have a national TV and film career.”

33 Families, One Big Build will be broadcast on BBC One on Friday, August 19, at 7.30pm.
