QUICK-thinking neighbours stopped a fire from spreading to a house this afternoon.

Firefighters from Cleckheaton were scrambled to a blaze on Stoney Lane in Lightcliffe where a wheelie bin fire had spread to some fencing.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) spokesperson said some barbecue coals had been discarded in the bin, but weren't fully out.

This caused the bin fire, which then spread to the fencing.

The occupants of the house were out, so quick-thinking neighbours started to tackle the blaze with a hose pipe until firefighters got to the scene.

A hose reel was used to bring the flames under control, but the fencing was destroyed.

The WYFRS spokesperson said it was lucky the fire had not spread to the house, but the neighbours' actions prevented that from happening.

It happened at around 3pm and firefighters were at the scene for around half an hour.
