FIREFIGHTERS were called to a chemical incident on the outskirts of Bradford city centre.

They were called to the scene, at Haworth Scouring Company on Gibson Street, off Leeds Road, at 8am.

An engine from Bradford Fire Station went, along with a specialist hazardous materials officer.

Tests were carried out and the site was deemed to be safe and firefighters handed back over to the factory.

The fire service spokesperson said there had been no exposure and no concerns for the public.

Haworth Scouring Company said around 200l of Ferric Chloride had been inadvertently pumped into its Sulphuric Acid tank.

These chemicals are used together in the firm's normal processes, but not normally stored together.

Some fumes were coming from the tank, so it was cordoned off and workers removed from the affected area.

The firm said precautionary measures were taken and the fire service was made aware of the situation.

They attended the scene and called for support from their chemical experts, while the site was cleared of all employees and contractors as a further precaution, the firm added.

Haworth Scouring said a thorough investigation of the tank area was carried out and emissions ceased around noon.

The firm added the fire service handed the site back at around 10am, with no requirement for a follow-up.

They added that corrective actions have been put in place to prevent a reoccurrence and they were "very impressed with the quick response and professionalism of the attending officers who remained pragmatic throughout".

No-one was injured and the correct preventative procedures were taken, said the firm.
