MAYOR Tracy Brabin is delighted to see a West Yorkshire city has been shortlisted to host Eurovision 2023.

Back in July, it was announced that the UK would host the singing competition next year on behalf of 2022 winners Ukraine.

20 cities threw their hats in the ring and, on Friday, the shortlist was whittled down to seven.

Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Sheffield all remain in the running.

Mayor Brabin said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Leeds has been shortlisted to host Eurovision 2023 – it's an amazing city, bursting at the seams with vibrant creativity and would shine given the chance to host this event.

"The whole West Yorkshire region is a beacon of culture - from Bradford's City of Culture in 2025, to Kirklees year of music in 2023.

“Our vibrant Ukrainian community have built their lives here and since the tragic events unfolded recently, have helped us to open our arms to offer solidarity, support and shelter to the families fleeing the war.

"I hope Leeds, and the whole of West Yorkshire, will be given the honour of hosting Eurovision in their name.”

The official host city will be announced later this year, with an expected time of Autumn.
