A BOOK celebrating the quirky and rich history of Bradford has been written by a woman born and bred in the city.

Cath Muldowney’s discovery guide, 111 Places in Bradford That You Shouldn't Miss, looks at some of the more unusual locations around the district.

She has produced a personal tour away from the crowds, while sharing entertaining insights, cultural anecdotes and insider tips.

The book is a guide for locals and experienced travellers that reveals the fascinating, unusual and little-known places of this story-filled city.

Each location has two pages devoted to it in the guide featuring a photograph taken by Cath herself and stories and anecdotes.

She goes to all corners of the district with sites including Bradford Police Museum, Airedale Heifer pub, The One in 12 Club, Bradford’s smallest pub – The Black Rat in Thackley, the underground Sunbridgewells complex in the city centre, Denso Marston Nature Reserve and Bradford Ice Arena. Bombay Stores – the UK’s largest Asian department store – is also highlighted.

Other places she visits in the guide include Ilkley Lido, Judy Woods, Apperley Bridge Marina, Baildon Moor, Bradford Grand Mosque and St David’s Ruin in Harden, Bingley.

Cath says she saw similar guides for a number of cities including London and Leeds but wondered why one was not produced for Bradford. She contacted the guide’s publishers, pitched the idea and spent 12 months researching each featured site. She added she wanted the guide to showcase what Bradford has to offer to tourists and people who already live in the district.

She said: “It has been a real treat to do it.

“It’s made me proud of my city. It took 12 months to do.

“I found things that I was not aware of. I was born and bred in Bradford, so I have insider knowledge.

“The book doesn’t feature the more tourist places like the Alhambra Theatre, but it might have things that people who even live in Bradford don’t know about. I found things that I’m not aware of.

“The brief of the book is to feature places that are quirky and not too well known. I felt it should have places that are accessible. I thought of free places and outdoor places.

“I have always been a champion of Bradford. It has got a bad reputation, and it’s seen as a poor relation to Leeds, so I wanted to set the record straight.”

The book is available now priced £13.99.
