A BANKING giant is yet to reveal details of a planned temporary city centre branch – over three months after it was forced to shut its existing branch.

Santander closed its branch on the junction of Darley Street and Kirkgate in April after discovering “structural issues” with the listed building’s roof and ceiling.

In June customers were sent a letter saying the work was taking longer than anticipated, and that the company was looking for a way to offer them alternate banking facilities in the city centre.

Shortly after this, Santander applied for planning permission to create a temporary branch at its huge regional office on Nelson Street.

However, these plans have since been withdrawn.

The Telegraph & Argus asked Santander what the latest was on work to fix the issues at the Darley Street Branch, why the plans had been withdrawn and what progress had been made on finding a temporary branch in the city centre.

A Santander spokesperson said: “We are continuing to progress with our plans to establish an alternative way for local people to access banking services in the area.

“This will be a temporary solution until we have a fully operational site back in the city centre.”
