A NEW counselling project is set to calm the minds of pregnant women struggling alone in Bradford.

The Manningham-based Millan Centre is set to offer group therapy, individual sessions, mental health assessments and more alongside its other wellbeing projects.

The service will launch with a Q&A session from the Millan Centre’s chairperson Elizabeth Hellmich MBE; Saliha Sadiq, the centre’s vice chair and mental health director; Sasha Butt, head of mental health and wellbeing at Bradford district and Craven Health & Care Partnership; Dr Parsa Mushtaq, a working gynaecologist, and Rukeya Miah, a deputy associate director of nursing, senior midwife and advocate.

Saliha told the T&A: “There’s such a need and demand. What’s been brought to my attention is the community of women, not just locally, saying you can’t access early support from the NHS, statutory organisations, as there’s a long waiting list.

“During my research I was speaking to a midwife and she said there are services in the NHS but, because of the language barrier, a lot of women don’t know how to access them.

“Any questions people have on the day, they can ask – any worries, anxiety.”
