BRADFORD-BASED Dance United Yorkshire, which changes the lives of marginalised people through dance training and performance, staged a mini-festival at Holme Wood at the weekend, featuring performances by children and young people.
It was part of DUY’s Resi/Dance dance project, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Since 2019 DUY has been delivering free classes and projects at Holme Wood, reaching children, young people and adults.
Working in partnership with Cecil Green Arts, DUY designed workshops for St Columba's Primary School and created dance work for the weekend's colourful parade at Holme Wood, as a finale to the project.
Led by local band Samba Jamba, children, young people and volunteers paraded with scarves, banners and puppets, for an audience of over 300 people, followed by burgers, ice-cream and play equipment provided by St Christopher’s Church and a barbecue by Emerge.
Resi/Dance is entering its final year of funding but, says DUY founder Helen Linsell: “We're committed to providing ongoing dance opportunities for people in Holme Wood and are exploring ways to acquire more funding. Parachuting in with a one-off project is not what the community needs, we hope to find the support to carry on the work we've been doing.”
DUY’s free summer project for nine-12year-olds is August 8-12.
