A MAN has appeared in court charged with possessing a knife in Tesco and stealing more than £300 worth of alcohol from the supermarket.
Dumitru Popescu, 48, faced two charges of theft from a shop and the possession of a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public place.
In the first offence, Popescu, of Holland Street, Kingston-upon-Hull, stole a total of £338 worth of alcohol from Tesco, Great Horton Road, Bradford, on May 14, 2022.
In the second charge, Popescu had with him, without good reason or lawful authority, in a public place an article which had a blade or was sharply pointed, namely a silver-handled knife.
This offence also took place at Tesco, Great Horton Road, on May 14, 2022. Popescu was ordered to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 costs for this charge. A collection order was also made by the court.
The silver-handled knife will be forfeited and destroyed by West Yorkshire Police.
For the two offences, Popescu was handed a community order which includes a curfew requirement with electronic monitoring for 16 weeks between 6pm and 5am daily.
Popescu pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court on July 4.
