FIVE males have been arrested after violent disorder which included police being attacked in Undercliffe.

Officers were in the area as part of a pre-planned operation when a group of young males attacked the police.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place yesterday afternoon, but there was some damage to a police vehicle.

The five males arrested are aged between 16 to 21 years old and have been arrested on suspicion of offences including violent disorder and racially aggravated public order.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Farrell, of Bradford CID, said: “This was a targeted attack on the Police, where a group of males engaged in disorder.

“Violent incidents like this will not be tolerated and I am sure the majority of the community will support our efforts to find those responsible.

“My officers are put on the front line to help the community, not to come under attack.

“We are working with our colleagues in the local Neighbourhood Policing team who have increased patrols to provide reassurance in the area.

“I would like to thank the community that have supported us in taking positive action.

“I would appeal to the community if anyone witnessed the disorder and may have mobile phone footage, dash cam or CCTV to come forward and help the investigation.”

A councillor has condemned the attack on police in Undercliffe, adding fed-up residents held a meeting earlier this month in an attempt to curb anti-social behaviour.

Cllr Hassan Khan (Lab, Bowling and Barkerend) says work needs to also be done to engage with youngsters and give them activities to stop them hanging on the streets.

He said: “People are really fed up. They have been terrified in that area. It’s been happening for a long time in that area.

“More action needs to be taken in that area. People damaging the community and doing anti-social behaviour is not going to be tolerated.

“Parents need to talk to the youngsters involved and say to them that it’s not nice to do anti-social behaviour.

“We are working with officers to see what can be done to engage with youngsters in that area. One of the solutions is that youngsters need to get engaged with various activities in that area, rather than them hanging around on the streets.”
