THE family of a teenage cyclist who died following a crash has paid a heartfelt tribute.

Lewis Smith, 17, from Wakefield, was involved in a collision with a stationary red Fiat 500 on Station Road, Hemsworth, on the evening of Wednesday, July 13. He later died in hospital.

His family has released photographs of Lewis and paid tribute to him.

Their statement says: “We’re devastated by the loss of our son Lewis, he was a young man who lived to ride and race his bike, it was his life.

“We’d like to thank all the emergency services, the staff at LGI, and in particular the local residents who tried to help Lewis at scene.”

Roads policing officers are appealing for witnesses following the crash.

The Eastern Area Roads Policing Unit would like to speak to anyone who has information or has footage regarding the incident which took place on Station Road, Hemsworth at around 7.06pm on July 13.

Officers investigating the incident would like to speak to anyone in the area at the time who may have witnessed the collision or seen the vehicles involved beforehand.
