TWO West Yorkshire Police officers who wrestled a knifeman to the ground after he terrorised a bus full of passengers have won a regional award.

PC Mike Watkins and PC Tom Swift won a North East Region Police Bravery Award at the National Police Bravery Awards ceremony in London last night.

PC Watkins and PC Swift were called to deal with a man swinging a large knife around his head and threatening passengers on a bus in Holbeck, Leeds, on December 21, last year.

As the officers arrived at the scene, they saw the man sitting down in the middle of the bus, brandishing the knife.

The officers boarded the bus and calmly told the man to drop the knife. He refused and advanced towards them.

After their Tasers had minimal effect, PC Watkins drew his baton to knock the blade from his hand.

But when the baton fell from his grasp, the man picked it up.

The melee spilled out into the street, where the officers pinned him to the ground and disarmed him.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Police Federation said: "Congratulations to West Yorkshire Police colleagues Sgt Mike Watkins and PC Tom Swift on their achievement of winning a Regional Police Bravery Awards.

"We're extremely proud of the dedication and bravery they've shown."
