A LOCAL manufacturer has unveiled plans to completely redevelop its site in Brighouse.
Welded steel mesh manufacturer Siddall and Hilton Products wants to extend and alter its works of Birds Royd Lane in the town.
Plans have been lodged with Calderdale Council which would see the partial demolition of existing building, the construction of extensions and new units.
The firm, the largest welded mesh manufacturer in the UK, is based across two sections, Calder Wire Mills and Tower Works which are split by Foundry Street.
According to the plans drawn up by TJP Architects, the Calder Wire Mills site would be partially deconstructed then extended creating a building of approximately 6,439sqm of floorspace with a new separate service yard to the north and staff car parking to the south.
Two new buildings would be built on the land to the south with a shared service yard in the centre. They would have floorspace of 719sqm and 1,003sqm.
In addition, the Tower Works site would be modified to create 4,256sqm of floorspace with a service yard retained to the south‐west and new staff parking.
In a design and access statement accompanying the plans, it states: “The existing layout, particularly of Site A [Calder Wire Mills], does not suit the current requirements of the business and the process within.
“The buildings are fragmented in layout with low clearance levels and steps in the floor slab levels.
“The proposals are specifically designed to introduce a process flow increasing efficiencies throughout the manufacturing process by replacing the older buildings with suitable new steel framed erections and level out the floor levels throughout.
“This is from goods‐in and materials storage, through manufacture to product storage and goods out.”
It adds: “The appearance of the building is very disjointed which reflects well over a hundred and sixty years of organic growth with no real overview of the visual appearance and function of the collective.”
Ian Thurley, chief executive of Siddall and Hilton Products, said: “We are looking to grow the business over the next three to five years and part of that growth will be to redevelop the existing site.
"This redevelopment is a fundamental part of our growth strategy, but clearly, we need to secure planning permission first and will be happy to release further details about our plans at that time.”
The company completely replaced the roof of one of its factories, increasing the amount of natural light in the building, as well as installing a new heating system in both factory units, replacing old and inefficient gas heaters.
One of the firm’s five welding machines was also fully reconditioned and refurbished during a two-month programme.
