The Peace Museum has unveiled a brand-new banner made in Bradford as a tribute to inspirational women.

Crafted by the district’s community and museum team, the project will be showcased at a special event at Kala Sangam on Saturday, July 23.

There will be poetry, music, speakers, tea and cake between 1pm and 3pm before the big reveal.

Hosted in Bread & Roses Café, the creators were asked to create a new banner in the style of existing peace banners within the museum’s collection.

Contributors worked to decorate the fabric with their own role models, inspired by the women peacemakers who defied expectations at the Greenham Common Peace Camp.

It is made up of 18 sections in total, with an additional two panels created by museum staff.

The banner will become a permanent part of its collection, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Greenham Common Peace Camp being founded.

The Breaking Boundaries project was funded by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council in partnership with Heritage Fund UK for International Women’s Day 2022.

Shannen Johnson, learning and engagement officer at the Peace Museum, said: “The tradition of banner making is something that’s been so important for the peace movement in the UK and worldwide.”
