A BRADFORD secondary school will not be admitting pupils into its sixth form this year.

Tong Leadership Academy, on Westgate Hill Street, said it made the decision after monitoring the number of pupils intending to join its Post 16 provision in September.

A spokesperson said a number of pupils are planning to study elsewhere and the sixth form would be unviable this year.

“Throughout the year, we have been monitoring the number of offers made to pupils and the number intending to join our sixth form in September,” said a spokesperson for the school, which is part of Star Academies.

“Many pupils are looking to study elsewhere next year so we have been working with a huge range of partners across the city to ensure our pupils secure the progression path of their choice.

“Given pupils’ choices for next year, it is not viable for the school to run a broad programme of A levels and BTecs for Year 12 pupils in 2022-23.

“The decision will not affect any pupils who are currently studying in our sixth form.

“We can confirm we will be looking to reintroduce the sixth form for Year 12 pupils in September 2023, when we plan to offer an attractive range of specialist post-16 pathways to our students.”

Councillor Matt Edwards (Green, Tong): "This is obviously disappointing for the young people who wanted to continue their studies at Tong Leadership Academy and I want to thank the leadership team there for they way they have worked with students and parents to find alternative places to study.

"Tong School is one of the biggest schools in the district and they have some amazing facilities so I really hope they can find away to run a sixth form programme next year that works for local young people. As a ward councillor they know I am here to help where I can."
