WORK is underway on a series of measures aimed at reducing rat-run roads in a village in the Bradford district.
The Saltaire Active Travel Neighbourhood (ATN) trial will see a number of roads in the village shut off to drivers looking for a cut-through.
Timber planting boxes will be built on a temporary basis for the six-month long trial on Tower Road, Dallam Road and Carlton Road - where they all meet Bingley Road - and Titus Street at the junction with Victoria Road. These allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel the full length of these roads, but does not allow a vehicle to pass.
Vehicular deterrent paving, a type of road surface that prevents private cars from entering or exiting a road but still enables larger service vehicles to pass, will be installed on Carlton Avenue and Park Street.
A school street, where roads outside a school are closed to non-residential traffic between school drop-off and pick-up times is planned for Saltaire Primary School.
Councillor Kevin Warnes (Green, Shipley) said: “We are hoping that this will provide a solution to the years of traffic-related issues that residents in Saltaire and Hirst Wood have dealt with.
“This won’t solve all of the problems, there are going to be glitches. Things can be reviewed.”
The work, which started on July 11, is expected to last for four weeks.

The decision to trial the measures has been taken following a consultation with residents and businesses over the last year. A consultation last year returned 489 responses, with 80 per cent of respondents feeling positive about the concept of introducing an ATN in Saltaire.
Cllr Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “We’re excited to begin the trial for the first Active Travel Neighbourhood in the district which should make a real difference to residents’ everyday lives.
“The Saltaire community has experienced significant numbers of people from outside the area using the neighbourhood as a cut-through for years.
“The scheme should improve safety and air quality while encouraging more people to walk and cycle for shorter journeys.
“We really hope that the residents of Saltaire get involved with the trial and provide us with feedback so that we can continually improve the measures to ensure that they work for everyone.”
