“I FIND it very therapeutic - watching each flower blossom puts an extra smile on my face.”

The sight of Mohammed Javed’s garden would raise anyone’s spirits. “Many people who walk past my garden turn their heads and look at the flowers and it brings joy to their faces,” he says. “I recently saw a couple of elderly men who stood and admired my garden for a good few minutes and I enjoyed that.”

Roses, marigolds, pansies and petunias are among the many blooms in his colourful Bradford haven.

“I started off with a couple of £1 roses that I picked up from Wilko years ago and to this day these pink and yellow roses still blossom each summer,” he says.

“Gradually I began to shop for plants at Tong Garden Centre as well as Morrisons and Asda. I have come to enjoy my favourites like petunias and French marigolds that I plant every year and they always give a huge array of colour.”

“It's a hobby that I enjoy. It gives me sense of achievement and feelings of enjoyment and happiness."

Mohammed, 46, who lives with his wife and four daughters, has been gardening for more than a decade.

“My family aren't as keen in the garden as I am, but my daughters - who I call my four flowers - love seeing the plants grow. It keeps them smiling. We all enjoy the colourful garden and the decorations like windmills and chimes.

“I think everyone can start their own garden, whatever size and however inexperienced they may be.”

Mohammed hopes that by having a garden that comes alive with colour each year he can inspire others to take up the pastime.

“Gardening is known to be good for your mental and physical health - it keeps your mind, body and soul active. In my area, apart from my elderly neighbour Kathleen who moved out few years ago, nobody else does anything to their garden, which is a shame.”

Mohammed, who enjoys gardening makeover programmes on TV, especially those fronted by Alan Titchmarsh, does all his shopping for flowers in one or two trips. “I do all the messy potting up in my back garden and then bring each pot to the front ready for a summer show," he says.

He waters the flowers in his many tubs daily. “It can take on average four to five short rounds of water fill ups. I have a good daily routine.

“Each year my garden has done better than the previous year and I look forward to seeing how it looks in the years ahead.”
