WEST Yorkshire Police has spent more than £1.1m on kennelling and vets’ fees for dogs it has seized.
The figures were released through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the force.
Between 2019 and June 12 this year, 515 dogs were seized by police. The figure was highest in 2019, when the force seized 196 dogs.
In the same period, 141 dogs were put down/destroyed.
West Yorkshire Police figures also revealed that it seized 159 dogs between 2019 and 2022 which were a suspected banned breed.
Dog breeds banned in the UK are Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro.
The figures released through the FOI also revealed that £1,155,602 was spent on kennelling and vets’ fees for the seized dogs. The cost of putting down/destroying dogs is included in veterinary fees.
