“A LOT Of people come here for our home-cooked food and come back again and again.”

The Hare and Hounds in Hipperholme prides itself on its meals, the majority of which are cooked from scratch using locally sourced ingredients.

“We make most things on site, from pastry upwards,” says a team member at the Denholme Gate Road pub.

Popular include beer-battered fish and chips, steak and ale pie, Caesar salad and a variety of gourmet burgers.

“We have also introduced a small plates special menu, which includes a meal and pudding perfect for anyone with a smaller appetite.”

Vegetarians will be spoiled for choice with vegetable lasagne and cauliflower and broccoli bake - both vegan dishes - among the many options, along with gluten free choices.

The West Yorkshire pub serves a North East England favourite, the Teesside Parmesan or Parmo, breadcrumbed chicken breast, deep-fried, smothered in Bechamel sauce and topped with melted cheese. There’s a veggie version too.

“It’s a little bit different. We like to experiment on the menu and it has been a big hit.”

Mouth-watering desserts include cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding.

Sunday is their busiest day, with traditional lunches. "We get a lot of families coming. Customers are not just from the local area, some come while on a day out.

“We get some really good reviews on social media, and we have 4800 followers on Facebook.”

The welcoming pub attracts many regulars, with some having supped there for many years.

Part of the Stonegate Group, the inn benefited from a major revamp in February. Its rich red, blue-grey and cream colour scheme helps to retain a traditional look, giving the interior a smart yet cosy feel.- New flooring has also been installed.

People can eat and drink outside as well, making the most of the sunshine in the pub’s large beer garden.

Popular at the bar are Timothy Taylor’s Golden Best and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, on rotation.

The Hare and Hounds is hosting karaoke sessions on the first Saturday of the month, which have gone down a treat.

“The first one, in June, was a great success,” says the team member. “Loads of people turned up and we had some cracking singers.”

With hounds in its name, the pub is certainly dog friendly, with a special dining area where people can sit with their pets. “We get loads of dogs coming in. People stop by on walks or they sit while families have a meal.”

The pub runs competitions on social media, where people can win a meal for following the inn and sharing its post. There may be a quiz night in the future.
