A HUGE Bradford school is looking to spend £2 million on expanding its facilities so it can accept children from the age of four.

Bradford Grammar School, located on Keighley Road in Frizinghall, currently educates ages six to 18 with over 1,000 youngsters on its books.

Now its Junior School, affectionately known as Clock House, is looking to build new accommodation, worth around £2 million, next to the existing building to allow for pupils to start in Reception and Year 1 as of September 2024.

As part of the plans, which have been submitted to Bradford Council, there will be a significant investment in its grounds to create further natural spaces for all Clock House children to enjoy as part of the school’s outdoor curriculum.

This will include a mud kitchen, a construction area, a woodland exploration area, discovery trails and an outdoor performance space.

Richard Ribeiro, who took over as headmaster of the Junior School in May of 2020, said: “The eco-friendly designs are spacious, light and well-resourced and will allow our young learners to experience an outstanding Bradford Grammar School education in a secure and nurturing environment.

“Meanwhile the grounds development will be a creative space for all our children to develop and use their imaginations and be connected with nature.

“This is an exciting time in the history of Bradford Grammar Junior School as we seek to enhance the academic and co-curricular journey of every pupil.

"We look forward to welcoming new learners and new staff to the Bradford Grammar School family in 2024.”

Subject to planning permission, building work will take place in 2023 in time for its new starters in September 2024.

The school will be holding an Open Morning in the new academic year to share further information about its plans.

Bradford Grammar School was founded in 1548 and granted its Charter by King Charles II in 1662.

It has been an independent school since 1975 after the direct grant grammar scheme was scrapped.

Entrance is by examination, except for the sixth form, where admission is based on GCSE results. The school gives means-tested bursaries to help with fees.

Unlike many independent schools, Bradford Grammar School does not offer scholarships based on academic achievement.
