A MAN on trial accused of murdering Kian Tordoff says he wanted to get away from everyone in a car he was sharing after learning the 19-year-old had been stabbed.

Six men are on trial accused of the murder of Mr Tordoff and the attempted murder of Matthew Page – known as Matthew Lowther – in the early hours of October 10 last year on John Street, Bradford city centre.

Adam Qayum, 23, of Avenel Road, Allerton, was the fifth defendant to give evidence in the trial at Bradford Crown Court.

He denies charges of murder, attempted murder and wounding with intent - in relation to Mr Lowther.

Qayum says he initially travelled to Bradford city centre in a Seat Leon with some of the other defendants and was later the same night a passenger in a white BMW X5, containing the six men, which stopped at Rawson Square.

Qayum says he was not involved in any violence himself and in the first incident tried to stop a fight between Arbaz Khan and another man known as ‘Chaser’.

Qayum told the court he did not strike anyone but was hit himself.

The car then travelled to the home of Arbaz Khan’s girlfriend. Qayum says he got into the BMW and asked them for a lift back to his home, but they instead went into Bradford.

Qayum told the court he heard the 17-year-old admitting he had stabbed someone after the second incident.

Qayum, who was told to get out of the BMW with the others on Water Lily Road, Bradford, told prosecutor Mark McKone QC: “I wanted to get away from everyone who was in that car.”

Amaad Shakiel, 20, of Leaventhorpe Lane, denies murder, attempted murder and a third count relating to Mr Lowther of wounding with intent.

Arbaz Khan, 22, of Yew Tree Avenue in the Daisy Hill area, and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named due to his age, both deny all three charges but the teenager pleaded guilty to an alternative of manslaughter of Mr Tordoff on diminished responsibility on account of his mental health and unlawful wounding of Mr Lowther.

The other defendants in the trial Aizaz Khan, 27, of Yew Tree Avenue, and Mohammed Adil Hussain, 18, of Kite Mews, Lower Grange, deny murder and the attempted murder of Mr Page.

They all also deny a third count – wounding with intent - in relation to Mr Lowther.

The trial continues.
