BRADFORD City has asked for supporters to get behind the son of a former goalkeeper who is attempting to raise money for a family in need.
Richard O'Donnell, who recently left the Bantams, has set up a fundraiser for the family of best friend and ex-footballer Tommy Spurr.
Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Tommy, from Leeds, and his wife Chloe, received the devastating news that their three-year-old son, Rio, had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
The type of cancer he has is an extremely rare form called ‘Wilms Tumour’ which has spread to his lungs.
Rio will now undergo a very intense programme of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
As a result of this, the couple has had to drastically reduce their work schedule.
This prompted Richard's eight-year-old son Archie to help raise funds by running 3k every day during July.
Rochdale keeper Richard said: "I’m incredibly proud of him for wanting to do this.
"Not only was Tommy an incredible footballer but he’s an incredible man who would do anything for anybody.
"I know the ‘football family’ will come together and support Tommy, Chloe, Rio and Rudy."
