MORE details have been set out about a new mosque which is to be built on the site of a former Bradford pub.

The Fountain Inn, on Heaton Road, Heaton, has been derelict for many years and various plans to redevelop the site failed to come to fruition.

A plan submitted by the nearby Jamia Usmania - to demolish the pub and build a mosque and community centre in its place was approved - and more details have now been set out in a reserved matters application.

This application looks at things like appearance and landscaping.

A design and access statement lodged as part of the application says: “The submitted plans and elevations have now been developed and refined further since the original outline planning submission.

“The underlying principle of the design is to provide a building that offers architectural character, whilst adding quality and aesthetic enhancement to the immediate vicinity.

“All the principal elevations and in particular the main elevations to Heaton Road and Sykes Road along with the dome and minaret are considered to be the key architectural elements of the design.

“The design of the mosque and the community centre is of contemporary Islamic architecture, having arched windows and fenestration complete with a minaret and a dome.

“The design and appearance will need to contrast with the established character of the area as it is normal for a religious (and civic) building to have a contrasting and prominent effect on the street scene.

“The contrast, emphasis and importance of the building will have to be achieved by the choice of materials and colours.”

It adds: “We have kept the scale of the mosque’s various elements to an appropriate proportion and scale to give a prominent effect.

“This prominent effect is usual for religious and community buildings (of any religion) throughout the world.

“The principle of an imposing (vertical) feature/s on places of worship is well established in many religions & cultures and this element is an essential part of any Islamic design.

“However, the prominent effect in this case has been kept to a very modest scale.”

The application says a diverse range of architectural elements will be used and adds: “The location of the dome and the minaret facing Heaton Road anchors the building and provides a focal point along this important road frontage junction of Heaton Road and Syke Road.”

There are three proposed entrances to the mosque and community centre.

There will be an ‘everyday entrance’ facing the main car park; a ‘family entrance’ at the junction of Heaton Road and Syke Road as well as a ‘special occasions’ entrance intended for use on Fridays and special occasions when demand is higher.
