A SUPERMARKET chain wants to hear from residents over plans for a new store.

Lidl has earmarked the site of the former DW Fitness Leisure Club, off Haworth Lane, Yeadon, for a new food store.

The proposed supermarket would include a 1,400 square metre sales area and feature a bakery, longer tills with dual packing area and customer toilets.

The site will also include a 95-space car park, which Lidl says is ‘designed to accommodate shoppers at the store’s busiest times’. The car park will also include parents and child spaces and have EV electric charging points, which the supermarket chain says can increase in numbers if demand calls for it.

The new store would also employ 40 people.

The neighbour consultation event will take place on Tuesday, June 28, between 4.30pm and 7pm at the New Life Community Church, Haw Lane, Yeadon.

In a letter advertising the consultation event, sent out to nearby residents, Lidl says that typically only one HGV delivery will be made to the store each day. It added servicing and refuse collection to Lidl stores is undertaken by the same vehicle, which means a reduction in the number of store deliveries.

The letter also states: “The store would be built predominantly on the same footprint as the former DW Fitness building. The site would be lower in height and designed to minimise the visual impact for neighbouring properties.

Tree planting and boundary treatments have been included in the scheme.

A Lidl GB spokesman said: “We are pleased to be consulting with the local community over our draft plans for a proposed new food store off Haworth Lane in Yeadon.

“We will be holding a drop-in exhibition next week and would like to invite local residents to join us to discuss the plans and provide feedback.

“We will also be circulating a leaflet with freepost feedback across Yeadon over the coming days and residents will also be able to comment via a consultation website.

“We hope that as many people as possible are able to join us in this consultation and we look forward to sharing our plans with the community in due course.”

Lidl says all opinions on the store in Yeadon will be considered before an official planning application is submitted to Leeds City Council.

It is the latest proposed Lidl store in and around the Bradford district. The chain opened up a branch in Shipley in January this year.
