A GROUP of around 2,700 children from schools across the district attended an event to mark World Refugee Week.

The year six pupils gathered at Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground today for Boy 87, an event of poetry readings and music.

Boy 87 is the name of a book by Ele Fountain, whose main character Shif (12) needs to leave his family in search of safety.

Around 8,000 copies of the book have been given to year six pupils in the Bradford district in the last year.

Kersten England, Bradford Council chief executive, attended the event, tweeting: Brilliant to join 3,000 year 6 pupils who have all been reading 'Boy 87' by @EleFountain for a celebration of our connections to, and care of, one another in song, dance, and poetry.”
