A MAN bloodied in a fight armed himself with a machete while his wife and children slept upstairs because the person he had a brawl with threatened to “burn his house down”, a murder trial has heard.

But Arbaz Khan, 22, told Bradford Crown Court he did not use it to kill 19-year-old Kian Tordoff and did not attack anyone with the weapon at all.

Mr Khan is a dad of three, with two stepchildren and a baby boy of his own who was three months old at the time of fatal stabbing last October 10.

He said he “simply wanted to scare them” when he got out of a white BMW X5 on John Street-Rawson Square next to a group of young males and females wielding a machete of around 18 inches in length.

Less than 10 seconds later, Mr Tordoff was stabbed multiple times by a 17-year-old – who cannot be named due to his age – who also got out the vehicle, armed with two blades.

Mr Khan and his brother, Aizaz Khan, 27, both of Yew Tree Avenue, Daisy Hill, Amaad Shakiel, 20, of Leaventhorpe Lane, Adam Qayum, 23, of Avenel Road, Allerton, Mohammed Adil Hussain, 18, of Kite Mews, Lower Grange, and the 17-year-old have been on trial since last Tuesday.

All six deny murdering Mr Tordoff and attempting to murder Matthew Page – also known as Matthew Lowther.

Mr Khan said he was heading to Frame 2 to watch a Tyson Fury boxing match when he stopped in the white Seat Leon he was driving in Bradford city centre.

He got out the vehicle to sort things with a man named Abdullah – know as “Chaser” – as the 17-year-old was having issues with him.

But he said Chaser punched him in the face for no reason, so he fought back and a large street brawl ensued with everyone then beating Mr Khan up for no reason.

Mr Khan eventually managed to escape to the Seat and admitted to being “terrified” the mob were going to “seriously injure” him.

His ears were perforated and his left one was bleeding, which he has lost half his hearing in, and Mr Khan drove to his wife’s house, the court heard.

This is where he picked up the machete.

Mr Khan said: “At the time I was panicking and scared, under the stairs is a storage room and I picked up a machete.

“Abdullah and the other people, mainly Abdullah, they were threatening me, he said he was 'going to come to my house and burn it down'.”

He admits it was a mistake not ringing police, but that he had lost both his phones, including one at the scene, and said he did not want to go upstairs bloodied and wake his wife and children – who were asleep in her bed – to use her phone.

The trial continues.
