EMERGENCY services were called when a car was spotted in the river that runs alongside a popular park in the Bradford district last night.

A crew from Shipley Fire Station was called at 8pm last night following reports of a car in the river at Roberts Park in Saltaire.

However, a spokesperson from Shipley Fire Station said the crew was sent back to the station.

The spokesperson said: "The police returned us en route and said it was a false alarm.

"The car's wheel was sticking up and people could see it because the water levels in the River Aire had dropped so low.

"The car had been there ages. It must have been at least 18 months."

The sight of the upside down vehicle, near the bridge from the World Heritage Site into the award-winning park, has left visitors somewhat bemused in recent days. It is not currently clear what efforts are being made to remove the car.

"It actually looks quite artistic, with its wheels emerging from the water, so I guess they could always leave it there as a quirky tourist attraction. It sure got us talking," said one passer-by.
