Bradford sides Pheonix Vets and Route One Rovers claimed the cups at a northern football tournament.

The Star Tissue UK Football Championships hosted by Asian Image attracts clubs from across the North West and Yorkshire and this year was played over several weeks in Blackburn.

This weekend two finals took place at the venue and attracted teams from across the region.

In the Vets showcase, Blackburn’s Club 58 were pipped to the trophy by Bradford’s Phoenix Vets 1-0, with a first half goal by Shezad Iqbal settling the final on the day.

Blackburn Rovers starlet Tyrhys Dolan presented the winners trophy to Pheonix captain Ishaq Hussain. Players and fans from both sides poised with Dolan as he spent time chatting to local footballers at the final held on Sunday.

In the Open Age final which kicked off later on the same day Bradford side Route One Rovers beat Prestwich Marauders 4-3 in a game full of goals, missed chances, great saves and a defining penalty.

It came 10 months after they lost the same final after being 2-0 with 30 minutes to go. Back then a penalty and a sending off turned the same in their opponents favour and they surrendered a two-goal lead.

This time goals from Mwembie, Anees Younis and a double by Zak Khan secured the championship - the club's third cup win of the season.

Earier in the tournament, which began on May 22, Route One had ovecome sides from Bolton and Blackburn.

Presenting the main trophy on the day was the Lord Mayor of Lahore Col Mubashir Javed who was visiting the region over the weekend.

Lahore is the capital of the Punjab province of Pakistan and described as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in South Asia, renowned for its architecture and history.

Commenting on his visit Col Mubashir Javed he said: “It was excellent to see the pride and passion the teams and their fans had for the game of football. Very much like people have for cricket in my home city!

“It was also good to see the numbers of young people from all backgrounds getting involved in sport and how level of talent has been developed within these clubs.”
