A DRUG fuelled man who carried out a terrifying attack on a woman in her home has been jailed for two years.

Ashley Keenan had taken Ecstasy when he kneed her in the ribs, grabbed her by the neck and tried to asphyxiate her under a duvet, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

He only stopped the prolonged assault when the police kicked the door off its hinges to gain entry to the Bradford flat.

Keenan, 28, of no fixed address, was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by Bradford and Keighley magistrates on May 10.

He appeared before the Crown Court in custody having been recalled to prison.

Prosecutor Charlotte Noddings said the woman had been in a relationship with him but had blocked him on her phone because she wanted to end it.

Keenan turned up at her home late on September 7 last year and became very angry.

Miss Noddings said he kneed the woman in the ribs, grabbed her by the neck and said he was going to kill her. He then put a duvet over her head but she broke free and ran towards the door.

He grabbed her again and tried to prevent her from letting the police into the flat.

The court heard that she suffered bruising to her head, a cut and swollen lip and bruising to her neck and arms.

Keenan had six previous convictions for nine offences, including battery and a Section 20 wounding but nothing for domestic violence.

Miss Noddings said it was a persistent assault that involved strangulation.

The court heard in mitigation that Keenan had been recalled to prison on other matters and accepted that this crossed the custody threshold.

The victim suffered ‘limited bruising’ in the assault, although it was conceded that she had been physically and psychologically harmed.

Keenan knew the relationship was over and had taken drugs only infrequently.

He had a large and supportive family and worked as a labourer when the employment was available.

Recorder Anesh Pema said it was a prolonged assault that must have been terrifying for the woman.

The police had to kick the door off its hinges to get into the flat after she had been attacked.

Keenan was under the influence of Ecstasy and had attempted to asphyxiate his victim under a duvet.

A restraining order for an unlimited period of time prevents him from having any contact with the woman.
