Travellers who set up camp in much of Shelf Park are in the process of being evicted, a council has said.

More than 15 caravans can be seen on the park green as well as road vans and a quad bike.

It is understood the travellers arrived on the site on Tuesday morning.

Calderdale Council said it was aware of the situation.

Council spokesperson said: “We’re aware that travellers are currently situated at Shelf park.

"We have visited the site and we’ve put our eviction procedures into place for dealing with this situation.”

It comes just two days ahead of Appleby Horse Fair, an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers in the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in Cumbria.

Appleby Horse Fair began as a Gypsy tradition for family and friends who roamed across the country to meet once a year.

It meant people could catch up, share good news and bad news, mourn people who may have passed and celebrate new life that had happened within the year.

According to organisation, The Traveller Movement, life for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people is rooted in nomadism, "the centrality of their extended family, unique languages and entrepreneurial economy".
